Cold Water Swimming

Ice Swimming

Here at Hangloose we are open 12 months of the year including the winter season. We understand some swimmers reap the benefits of the cold temperatures and enjoy cold water immersion so we want to remain accessible to you all year round!

Cold Swim health benefits

Swimming in very cold water can give such a boost to your health. It helps improve mental health by reducing stress, may lower high blood pressure through better circulation, and strengthens the immune system over time. Taking the plunge into very cold water offers real, lasting benefits.

Join our winter swimming club and enjoy unlimited swims with monthly or annual passes.

How to be safe whilst cold water swimming?

If you’re planning to join our group of winter swimmers, it’s important to understand how to stay safe while ice swimming. Before entering icy water, know that the body can experience cold water shock or a cold shock response, which may cause rapid breathing, increased heart rate, or even panic. To stay safe, always enter the water slowly to help your body adjust. Swim near clear and accessible exit points in case you need to get out quickly.

Cold water Swimming Rules

We have a duty of care to all our swimmers, which means we do have some important swim rules in place.

All swimmers must wear tow floats year-round while wild swimming for safety.

When water temperatures drop below 12°C, wearing a wetsuit is mandatory. Exceptions may be made, but you must complete [this form] and be a member to be considered.

Our lifeguards are fully trained to assist members during winter swimming sessions. They assess each swimmer’s ability and strength in the water, guiding them to safely complete either a full cold swim or a quick dip, with or without a wetsuit.

*Please be aware that we may adjust the time or length of the routes if necessary. Our team has a duty of care, and if we believe the temperature is affecting our swimmers – regardless of their ability – we’ll take action to ensure everyone’s safety.
