Everything You Need to Know Before You Swim

From water quality and safety guidelines to what to pack and how to get the most out of your visit, this page covers all the practical info. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned swimmer, it’s your go-to guide for a safe, smooth, and enjoyable experience at Bluewater.

Our Water Quality

Our lake water is tested regularly by an independent third party to ensure it’s safe for both humans and dogs to swim in. The water is naturally filtered as it percolates through the rock bed, making it very clean.

However, as this is a natural lake, no chemicals are used to treat the water. This means you may encounter some wildlife, and the water is subject to natural elements. Many of our swimmers feel this adds to the sense of ‘wildness’ and atmosphere.

We always advise swimmers to rinse off after swimming and to wash their hands before eating or putting them near their mouth.

Swimwear & Safety Guidelines

All swimmers are required to wear appropriate swimwear.

Wetsuits become mandatory when the water temperature drops below 10°C. If you wish to swim without a wetsuit in these conditions, you must be a regular member and obtain approval from the site team. You can request permission to swim without a wetsuit here.

All swimmers must wear a tow float at all times. You’re welcome to bring your own, or you can purchase one from us directly.

We also recommend bringing a towel and a dry set of clothes to change into after your swim. Please wear shoes when walking down to the water—we suggest flip-flops or similar easy footwear.

Facilities at Hangloose

We offer a range of on-site facilities to make your wild swimming experience even more enjoyable. You can find a full list of what’s available here.

Our facilities combine the freedom and thrill of wild swimming with the reassurance of a safe and secure environment. There is always a qualified lifeguard on duty, and we’ve mapped out clear swim routes for you to follow—all within a natural setting that offers the safety of an outdoor pool experience.

Add a Sauna to Your Swim

We have an on-site sauna that you can enjoy after your swim—perfect for warming up and relaxing.

Tickets can be purchased individually, but members receive a discounted rate. You can add the sauna to any swim for just £8.50, down from the standard price of £22—that’s a 61% discount!

Bluewater shopping centre

We share our parking facilities with Bluewater Shopping Centre—a fantastic mall packed with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. You can view the full store list [here].

Why not make a day of it? A swim, a sauna, and a bit of shopping sounds like the perfect outing to us!

Referral Scheme

If you’ve been a member with us for at least one month, you can refer your friends to join. For every successful referral, you’ll receive a £50 voucher as a thank-you. View our terms and conditions here.

To make things even easier, you’re welcome to bring one friend for free each month—a great way to let them try it out before signing up. And let’s be honest—once they’ve been, they’ll be hooked!

Swimmers Advice

New to wild swimming or just want to brush up on best practices? From staying warm to building confidence in cold water, these simple tips will help you get the most out of your swim—safely, comfortably, and with confidence.

01

Start Slow & Swim Safe

If you’re new to outdoor swimming, ease into it. Our lake offers a secure, lifeguarded environment with mapped swim routes—perfect for beginners. Start with short swims and give your body time to adjust.

02

Dress for the Water, Not the Weather

Even on sunny days, the lake can feel chilly. We recommend wearing a wetsuit, especially in cooler months. Tow floats are mandatory for safety—and you can buy one from us or bring your own.

03

Acclimatise Gradually

Enter the lake slowly and focus on your breathing. It’s normal for the cold water to feel intense at first. With regular swims, you’ll build confidence and tolerance.

04

Pack the Right Gear

Bring a towel, flip-flops for the walk to the water, and warm, dry clothes to change into afterwards. Why not add on a post-swim sauna session for just £8.50? It’s the perfect way to warm up.

05

Know Your Limits

Listen to your body. If you feel too cold or uncomfortable, exit the water and warm up. Our friendly team and lifeguards are always on hand to help if needed.
